Job Summary A strong and supportive leadership team is essential to our success and our abilities to continue to provide high quality and affordable medical care to our communities. Our medical director is responsible for the oversight and management of all veterinary care provided by our organization, including management of associate veterinarians. We strive for professional and medical excellence - our MD is focused on sustaining, evaluating, and improving our overall, top-of-the-line, veterinary medical care to ensure we are always performing at the highest level possible. The MD functions as a pillar of professionalism and leads by example, constantly demonstrating and encouraging a positive and productive working environment and team work. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the MD functions in a full-time outpatient medical role (M-F 9-5); however, MD candidates must be willing to cross train in all departments to ensure familiarity with all TAHO operations and be able to lead all medical professionals appropriately. Working Relationships Works very closely with, and provides management and leadership to, all associate veterinarians. Works closely with veterinary technicians and assistants. Works in partnership with the Executive Director, Hospital Manager, and Clinical Supervisors to lead and manage a positive and productive team. Works in partnership with the Executive Director to maintain and develop new protocols or SOPs to ensure we continue to improve and provide the highest level of medical and client care possible. Essential Job Functions Fosters a culture that supports development of engaged and empowered employees. Provides team with opportunity and guidance for personal and professional growth/improvement. In partnership with leadership team, serves as an overall leader for the hospital, providing oversight and management of medical care provided in both medical and surgical departments. Lead and direct medical health professionals. Assists in hiring of DVMS, veterinarian onboarding and training, DVM development, and management of DVM performance. Responsible for managing overall patient flow, ensuring patient care is always delivered in an efficient, safe, and compassionate manner. Responsible for assisting/leading meetings with veterinarians, departmental/hospital meetings, and other doctor-facing communications. Works in collaboration with the ED and Hospital Manager to ensure all teams have the resource and tools to deliver high-quality client and patient care. Works with the ED to manage/evaluate overall hospital expenses in an attempt to keep costs down. As a non-profit it is very important that our resources are managed appropriately. Oversees patient care issues, responds to client complaints that pertain to medical care provided. Interacts with the community and acts as a liaison and face-of-the practice to maintain our positive and charitable community reputation. Ability and willingness to learn all of TAHO policies and protocols in all departments and programs. Follows and enforces all organizational SOPs and protocols. Communicates openly and directly with ED and hospital management to keep them apprised of all unusual situations, or situations that require resolution, including issues with the team, clients, or patient care. Supervises handling and recording of controlled substances. At all times behave in a manner that upholds both personal and professional standards as an ambassador of TAHO. Train any designated persons in all aspects of patient care and efficient/safe clinic practices, maintaining a professional and friendly manner at all times. Be available to travel and train as requested. Strive to continually improve all medical/surgical care, training protocols, and team building. Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members. In addition to leadership responsibilities, functions as either a full-time medical or surgical provider (to be determined at hire - preference is given to individual). Responsibilities of this position will be provided upon request. Responds to the needs of the practice and our clients/patients, working the necessary hours (no less than 45/week) to ensure normal and successful operation of the practice and team. Other Critical Skills Demonstrate good (and safe) speed when necessary. Competently perform and teach CPR and other emergency measures. Competently handle surgical complications and rechecks. Competently and quickly handle/respond to emergency and urgent situations. Effectively critique and suggest additional disease control measures. Understand and practice low-stress animal handling. Understand and practice disease -prevention protocols. Communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Must be a licensed veterinarian in the state of Ohio and able to receive temporary licensure in the state of North Carolina for training. Must be able to maintain all current and correct licenses and insurance. At least five years of veterinary experience as a practicing DVM is required. Must have experience/working knowledge in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical practice. History and demonstration of Leadership and Management of a veterinary team is required. Must possess, or be able to obtain, DEA certification. Must be certified, or willing and able to become certified, with the USDA to provide international veterinary health certificates. Work Environment The offices and operations of a high-volume veterinary hospital can be high stress and very busy at times. The schedule can vary.
